Pharmacological Action
This prescription consists of five herbs. It is used to treat various conditions caused by wind-heat and fire-heat invading the upper part of the body. Heat is a yang pathogen with an upward nature. The head is the "meeting place of all yang" and the "residence of pure yang." Wind is the leading cause of all diseases. When wind and heat combine, they can invade the clear meridians of the head and face. If the Taiyang meridian is invaded, symptoms include fever, aversion to wind, and severe headache; if the Yangming meridian is invaded, there may be pain in the supraorbital ridge and swelling and pain in the gums; if the Liver and Gallbladder meridians are invaded, there may be migraine or vertex headache. For liver yang hyperactivity with fire-heat excess syndrome, the main symptoms are migraine and vertex headache, accompanied by hypochondriac pain, bitter taste in the mouth, dry throat, irritability, and dry stools. In the prescription, Chuanxiong is pungent, warm, mobile, and ascending. It is good at entering the head and dispelling wind to relieve pain, and is the key medicine for treating headache. Gypsum is pungent and cold. Its pungent nature can ascend and disperse, and its cold nature can purge fire. It is effective for heat symptoms in the head and face. When paired with Chuanxiong, it can ascend and disperse to clear heat and purge fire, as well as dispel wind and relieve pain. Therefore, Chuanxiong and Gypsum are selected as the main medicines. Baizhi dispels wind and relieves exterior syndromes, opens orifices, and stops pain. It is especially good at dispersing yangming meridian pathogens and has a fragrant aroma that rises to open orifices and relieve pain. It is commonly used for yangming headache, nasal sinus headache, and toothache due to wind-fire. Therefore, it is the auxiliary medicine. Jingjiesui and Bohe disperse wind pathogens and belong to the Lung and Liver meridians. They are good at dispersing wind and heat to assist the main and auxiliary medicines in treating headache, so they are the accessory and guiding medicines. When all these herbs are used together, they mainly have a pungent-cool and ascending-dispersing effect, combined with clearing and draining orifices. Together, they disperse wind-heat, open orifices, and relieve pain.
